Outputting A to Z only from Query in ColdFusion

Posted in ColdFusion | Dec 14, 2007 1:03:PM | John Ramon

So yesterday I needed to display the alphabet letters only if a database field started with the letter. Uh? Well let's say you have a table and you wanted last names, and then lets say there are only 2 name John Ramon, and Joshua Cry (sorry Josh) I wanted to output the alphabet only matching our last names. So...

| C | J |

I use Joshua cause I asked him for help and funny story he had to do the same thing yesterday, funny how things work out. So on to the code we came up with.

Ray Camden's Yahoo Weather Extended

Posted in ColdFusion | Dec 06, 2007 9:21:AM | John Ramon

Ray wrote a cool ColdFusion app using the Yahoo Weather API, I love it but I wanted images. So attached is an updated version of the app with image support. You can use it one of two way, the version attached uses Yahoo's images, or you can replace http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/us/we/52/ with the folder holding your own images. Yahoo uses the standard "Condition Codes" used by The Weather Channel so if you find the images for the Weather Channel's API, which I believe comes in different sizes, you can use them with this app. Hope this helps someone, like it helped me.

Thanks Ray for another great app.

No I'm not dead!!!

Posted in General | Oct 14, 2007 8:19:PM | John Ramon

Hey everyone just wanted to let everyone know what's been going on. I'm not dead and I'm not moving to PHP haha, I know it's been awhile since I have posted anything. Let's see I am super busy with work, my wife is 9 months pregnant with our second child, and I have to keep up with my 6 year old. If the baby is not here by Tuesday, they will induce Tuesday night. So I should have another son by Wednesday. I do have a secret project I'm working on. It's not a software package but something I hope will help bring the CF community together, super cool project I must say.

So why no posting or playing with the super cool features of CF8, well if anyone has kids can tell you my wife is nesting. Whats nesting? Well it the time in a womens pregnancy when she drives her mate crazy wanting everything cleaner then clean. I had to clean the crawl space out (crawl space: a small spider infested area to store junk you'll never use again) and let me tell you I hate spiders. Why did I have to clean it out, will the new born be playing there, will anyone see it? No! But when a women is nesting she is crazy and everything has to be just right or it drives them crazy, and if their crazy you'll go crazy. Two more days then the fun starts, no sleep, long nights, but hey I wouldn't traid it for anything. I can't wait for my 6 year old to meet his little brother. So give me a few weeks to get in a groove and I'll start posting more again.

Happy birthday!!!

Posted in CFBloggy | Sep 19, 2007 8:24:AM | John Ramon

Wow today is the first dirthday of my blog, seems like it just flew by. I haven't posted all month and I should be doing something but work has been busy and my wife is 8 months pregnant. So with getting the babies room ready, work, and spending time with my 6 year old son I haven't had time for anything. I do have a couple of new projects in mind and as soon as I have some time I'll start working on them.

As for CFBloggy I have a list of bug's I will be working on here soon, now that I'm running the latest version I have found a few. If anyone has any issues please email me them and I'll get them fixed up. I'm working on Version 2 when I have them time. Version 2 will have alot of the code cleaned up and the admin section will be using CFC's, the biggest features will be security. I'm going to test out a few other spam prevention methods, someone is posting comments that make no sense and is filled with links to sites.

ColdFusionBloggers.org, I'm sorry!!

Posted in General | Aug 31, 2007 8:28:PM | John Ramon

Well I guess updating my site to a whole new system, ColdFusionBloggers.org thought I was a new site and pulled the last 20 entries. My dates didn't change on the site or through my feed. Sorry Ray I don't know what happend. I am running a new database and the feed was not updated, although it is dynamic.

JohnRamon.com updated!

Posted in General | Aug 31, 2007 3:51:PM | John Ramon

Finaly my site is running the latest version of CFBloggy, and got a new look to go with it. It's also running MSSQL, no more Access yea! I may have lost a few hits in the update but nothing to worry about. If anyone sees any mistakes or anything not working right let me know, please. I figured my site could use a new look on it's first birthday.

Spammers got love them, or tell them where to go.

Posted in General | Aug 30, 2007 11:08:AM |

I have received lots of spam over the last week or so. It's really starting to bug me. I wrote a small script to catch the IP addresses and block them, hopefully this will stop most of it, if not all of it. I have a feeling it's from the same person, and I am using Lyla Captcha. It's only hitting the same to old posts over and over. Could it be a Bot? Has anyone else using Lyla had this problem?

I'll post again after I catch the IP addresses and block them see how it goes. If I still get them I will be adding CFFormProtect and see how it works out.

100 Posts and one month till my blogs birth day!

Posted in General | Aug 18, 2007 9:13:PM |

What a week! I have been super busy with work, and play. Last weekend my 6 year son won Grand Champion at his first Taekwondo Tournament. Very proud day for me and my wife. Also this week I'm no longer an employee at my company, I'm a partner. What better way then to grow old, but to grow old writing ColdFusion code. (Insert geek comments here).

I've also been trying to workout the 6 pages of css code to make a template from JohnRamon.com, and I have giving up. I am working on a new design, and I hope everyone likes it as much and the old one. I must tell you that the code on my blog is so outdated it scary. So updating to the newest version will improve preformace and stop the errors my code here kicks off from time to time.

If ColdFusion has to get pages from cheap dedicated servers, it may save you good time. After domain name registration, you can have your site's web space allocated. You also need to take care of the html or dynamic pages if you are looking for great search engine ranking of your web pages. The downlaod time can be enhanced by using cable internet. If all this sounds too complicated then an oracle certification or 642-453 test would be a good option to consider.
